PalmGHG Calculator V5 – GHG Quantification for RSPO

The RSPO’s PalmGHG calculator, with its upcoming V5 version, is revolutionizing greenhouse gas emission quantification in the palm oil industry. As reported by RSPO, this tool enables oil palm growers to estimate and monitor their net GHG emissions, aligning with international standards.

PalmGHG Calculator Methodology

The PalmGHG Calculator employs a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach, aligning with ISO 14040 and 14044 standards, to quantify major emission sources and sequestration for palm oil mills and their supply bases. It covers emissions from land use change, crop sequestration, fertilizer production and application, field fuel use, peat oxidation, mill operations, and transportation. The tool expresses results in tonnes of CO2 equivalents per hectare or per unit of product, considering CO2, N2O, and CH4 emissions as per IPCC guidelines.

Users input field and mill data for three consecutive years, with the calculator utilizing IPCC-recommended algorithms and emission coefficients. This methodology enables oil palm growers to identify GHG emission ‘hot spots’ in their production chain, establish benchmarks, and analyze trends for implementing more sustainable practices.

Updates in PalmGHG V5

The upcoming PalmGHG V5 introduces several key updates to enhance GHG quantification in the palm oil industry. It will be integrated into RSPO’s prisma platform, improving alignment and user experience. The new version includes revised methodologies for Land Use Change (LUC) and Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) emission calculations, as well as an improved conservation methodology. Additionally, PalmGHG V5 will feature updated emission factors and default values where necessary. RSPO has announced a pilot testing period from December 9, 2024, to January 10, 2025, with feedback submission due by January 10, 2025

Alignment with GHG Standards

PalmGHG V5 aligns closely with international GHG reporting standards, incorporating GHG Protocol Standards and IPCC guidelines. The calculator uses a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach consistent with ISO 14040 and 14044 standards, ensuring compatibility with global best practices. It covers scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, including revised Land Use Change (LUC) calculations and additional reporting components. This alignment enhances transparency and consistency in GHG reporting for the palm oil industry, allowing RSPO members to meet global regulatory requirements and sustainability standards.

Impact on Sustainability Consulting

The introduction of PalmGHG V5 is set to transform the role of sustainability consultants in the palm oil industry. While it may reduce the need for basic GHG calculations, consultants will likely shift towards more specialized services such as data interpretation, strategy development, and implementation of emission reduction plans. New opportunities emerge in areas like data collection, quality assurance, training, and support for using the calculator effectively.

Consultants may need to expand their expertise to cover additional components under scope 1, 2, and 3 reporting, as well as familiarize themselves with the integration of PalmGHG V5 into RSPO’s prisma platform. Their long-term value will lie in providing complex assessments, guiding continuous improvement, and helping companies navigate the evolving landscape of sustainability in the palm oil sector.

The training was highly practical, relevant and well-structured. What we found particularly valuable was the hands-on approach to identifying relevant Scope 3 categories, mapping data sources and owners and working through different calculation methods. Mr. Ildar demonstrated strong technical knowledge and was very effective in translating the requirements into practical steps that are relevant to our business operations.
